As time comes near

31 Jan. Though there are many students outside the classroom (for whatever reason), classes are going on as usual. In fact, some first year students had their reexams today! Many of them have recieved their answer sheets; and happy.

Journalism Dept is witnessing some feverish excitement, as some students are lagging behind in their movie production. In any case, Thursday 1 Feb is the last day.

SAC Staff Go On a Picnic

30 Jan. It is Muharram. And it is holiday time at SAC, this time it is for the staff…  The lecturers thought it fit to relax at a far away place. They drove down to a far away bungalow and spent time with one another and by themselves.

Whatever that be, Journalism students are as busy as  ever. Quite a few of them were working overtime to submit their movies. Sadly, some experienced last minute glitches. Hence, on special consideration, the deadline has been slightly elasticised to make room for them to submit the movies on 1 Feb morning. They have to reach the jury in different parts of India by 2 Feb evening! Good wishes.

Hindu Samajotsava

28 Jan. Mangalore witnesses a big day today. For many it is a day of remembering their guruji, for some simply a celebration, and for many others, including the Governments, it is a day of anxiety.

What is consoling is the fact that people cutting across caste, creed barriers have come together to help their Hindu brothers and sisters in organising this samajotsav. For Example, Samanvaya, under the leadership of Fr John Fernandes of the Chair of Christianity is an active supporter of this celebration. So is Catholic Sabha and other muslim organisations. Some Muslims will be serving Sharbat (lemon water) to the participants. With such good gestures, it is hoped that peace, harmony and communal amity will prevail in Mangalore and all over. After all, we are One Indian Society. Om Shanti, shanti, shanti….

Life in College & Premiere of Nayi Neralu

27 Jan. St Aloysius College Higher Primary School is getting ready for its School Day, today at 5.30 pm. It will be held at the School premises. All are welcome

I could not update you yesterday on the Boys’ Hostel, since I had to go for premiere of the much talked about Nayi Neralu of Girish Kasaravalli.

By the way, Subashini, Asst Director, of the film was there to introduce the film at Adlabs. The film begins with the old house, Nagalaxmama (Nagu) in her bed. Her husband Achchanaiah is forced to have a look at Vishwa who claims to be Rajanna, a diceased son of the old couple. The old woman takes it seriously. She wants to see Rajanna, whereas Achchanaiah phoophoos the idea (though not categorically).

His daughter in law – Venku or – Venkatalaxmamma wears a red saree without a bindi. Initially she also refuses to believe. Her daughter is a modern girl, rejects the claim outright. She can’t bear to see the differential treatment given to her mother, due to her widowhood.

Achchanaiah falls into the emotional trap set by Nagu, and Viswa comes home. He is a bird watcher, hardly itnerested in the affairs of day to day life or practicalities of life. He hates to see Venku wearing red. In the absence of the husband, Nagu forces Venku to wear a colour saree, bindi, and go before Viswa, who immensely likes her. Venku does not like this idea, but likes the feel of a normal life.

While washing clothes, a romantic scene can you take you -fan of Girish Kasaravalli- by surprise – the flowers. And the disturbed honeybees force Venku to protect Viswa. All hell breaks loose; Venku is trapped in Viswa’s arms. When the home and the world realises that this rebirth belief has gone a long way ahead, Venku declares that the “fruits” of this changes are apparent. She stoutly refuses to part with Viswa, citing their own previous arguement of rebirth.

Venku and Viswa are separated from their village (thanks to Rajanna’s compassionate father). Their daughter refuses to accept Venku her mother.  She complains to the police. Viswa has to be arrested on fraud. He is sentenced. Venku’s family coaxes her return.  They question her belief and the long absence of Viswa. But when the person is in your heart, why do you need belief?

The film is  brilliant. The story spanning three generations -represented by Nagu, Venku, and daughter Raji- unfolds very beautifully and with compex structure. I like the acting of Nagu and Viswa, specially in some scenes like brushing his teeth with coal, boating, etc.

Probably, Kottukapally’s music is a too loud for Girish’ movies. Else, there is not much to complain. Running in Adlabs (Mangalore), at 7.00 pm, it is a treat to watch.

Car Festival

25 Jan. It was people and people all the way. SAC Journalism team led by Yours Truly was there to do the shooting of this massive festival, for his Konkani project. All that one could see was people and people, a sea of humanity. Priests, men and women, and of course, brightly dressed young girls and boys!

More than anything, what amazes me is the religiousity of the people in our country. May our religious and cultural feasts help us bring about harmony and peace in society, not only within our communities, but more importantly among various communities.

Vehicle Strike Called Off

25 Jan. There is good news, there is bad news! For those who have already left home in the hope long holidays dues to strike (25), Republic Day (26), Sunday (28) and Muharram on (30), it is bad news; classes will go on as usual, and examinations will be conducted.

For those millions who otherwise would be inconvenienced due to the announced strike, calling it off, brings big relief. How nice! Thousands of crores of rupees saved; hopefully economy will be on the uprise, and even a common wo-man  will be able to live rather happily!

So, it is a normal day!
