Our Dear Fr Has Become Dr

Its a great pleasure to announce that our dear teacher Rev.Fr Richard Rego SJ was awarded doctorate (PhD) by the University of Pune on Thursday January 24.

Fr Richard Rego, who teaches journalism and mass communication at St Aloysius College here, did his doctoral  thesis on Girish Kasaravalli’s films under the guidance of Prof P N Paranjpe (retired professor at the dept of mass communication, Pune).

Entitled ‘Themes, Concerns, and Values in the Films of Girish Kasaravalli,’ the thesis examines the thematic concerns of the internationally acclaimed Kannada film director Girish Kasaravalli, in his films till early 2004, that is from his student diploma film Avashesh done at the FTII (Pune) in 1975, till Dweepa. 

Prof H S Eswara, former professor of mass communication and journalism, Bangalore University, and Prof Satish Bahadur, former professor at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune were the readers of the defence of the thesis. While Prof Bahadur was the film teacher of Girish Kasaravalli at the FTII, Prof Eswara was the external examiner during the Ph D defence by Fr Richard Rego in Pune. 

Fr Richard Rego is actively engaged in research on media and culture. He is the first lecturer from an undergraduate college under the Mangalore University to receive a University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Major Research Project, in 2006. The project examines the possibilities of utilization of media content in education at secondary school level. 

He is also the recipient of a state government research project (Konkani People in Suvarna Karnataka) on the occasion of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the formation of the state. The Karnataka Sahitya Academy published his research book Suvarna Karnatakanth Konkni Monis, a Konkani compilation of the cultural life and celebrations of the 32 different Konkani communities spread across the state.

A GREAT HONOUR FOR OUR DEPARTMENT

Sr Celine Vas B S ,Lecturer, Department Of Journalism and also the superior of Regina Celi convent, Ranipura in Dakshina Kannada was awarded with a Doctorate in Mass Communication and Journalism, by the Mangalore University here for her thesis on ‘The contribution of Christian Missionaries to Journalism in Karnataka.’  Sr Celine carried out her research working under the guidance of Dr G P Shivram, professor of mass communication and journalism at the Mangalore University.

Her thesis makes an analysis, revolving around the London missionaries of Bellary and Bangalore, Wesleyan missionaries of Mysore and Bangalore, Basel missionaries of Mangalore, Dharwad, Bellary and Mysore, Catholic   missionaries of the Mangalore, Bangalore and Mysore. 

We Congratulate Our Dear Sr and Wish Her all the happiness and Prosperity in her Future…

Jesuits Have a New Superior General

 19 Jan. Society of Jesus, popularly known as the “Jesuits” all the over world (and who run St Aloysius College Mangalore, St Joseph’e College Bangalore, Trichy, Loyola Collge Chennai & Andhra Pradesh,  Xavier’s College Mumbai & Kolkata) have a new superior General.

Fr Adolpho Nicholas (71) was elected th 30th Superior General of the Society, after the incumbent Fr Peter Hans Kolvenbach  requested the Society’s highest legislative body General Congregation to relieve him of his office. fradolfo_nicolas_021.jpg

Fr Nicholas is the 30th General of the Jesuits. He is a Spanish by birth. He has been working in Japan for the last few years.  We wish him and the Society all the best.

St Aloysius PUC Day

 19 Jan. It was a grand day St Aloysius Pre University College, Mangalore. It was the 128th College Day of the SAPUC. Though it was a public holiday, the PU College Day went on in full swing (thanks to the late declaration of the holiday). dignitaries.jpg

REVIEW WRITING COMPETITION

Al-Madhyam and Hopkins literary association organized a movie screening and review writing competition on 5th of Jan 2008.The movie TAARE ZAMEEN PAR directed by Ram Madhvani was screened. Vineetha from 3rd B.A,was the co-coordinator. Large number of students from both the association participated in the event.

PRERANA- THE HINDI FEST

Prerana, the inter college Hindi fest was held on 5th  of Jan 2008, in St.Aloysius College. The fest was organized by the Hindi department of the college.

Dr.Jayanth Prasad Nautiyal of Co-operation bank was the chief guest. Principal of the college, Rev.Fr.Swebert D’Silva, President of the association Qudsiya Begum, HOD of the department Dr.Mukund Prabhu were present. The book “Prerana” was released by the Principal. The website of the association was also released by the Chief guest.  Students of the various colleges actively participated in the Programmes.

2nd SEMESTER TEXT BOOK RELEASED

The department of English of St.Aloysius college has released the second semester text book of English on 2nd of jan.2008. Principal of the college Rev.Fr.Swebert D’Silva and the registrar of evaluation of the college, Dr.Narahari were the chief guest.

This book has been the first attempt of our college to prepare a text book of its own. Prof. Lourdusamy, the HOD and Mr.Ratan, lecturer of English expressed their views about the book.The book is the outcome of the hard work of all the lecturers of English department.All the lecturers of the department were present in the occasion. Mr.Alwyn D’Sa, lecturer gave the vote of thanks.

Shooting Stars 2008 and Cinematography

4 Jan. It’s shooting time again. You could straightaway take your camera and start shooting! All that you need to know is just imagine! Imagine! Let your imagination run riot!

We are talking about Shooting Stars – 2008 – the third edition of short film making competition for college students (any stream, any discipline, any subject!!!) followed by Shooting Stars Short Film Festival …

Take up a theme or concept and develop it into a 5-10 short film (fiction or documentary). And you have a cash prize waiting for you.

You can make your film in any language. If not in English or Hindi, you need to sub-title it in English.

Remember, you are fighting at the National Level (and why not? Higher the level, stiffer, greater more natural the fight! Pun intended (:-)

There are three CASH prizes - Best Film, Best Konkani Film, and Best Aloysian Film (by SAC students).

What makes it all the more special: UGC workshop on  Art of Cinematography - a 3-day National Level Workshop for undergraduate students from all over the country. Very few seats for grabbing.
