The Post Graduate department of Biotechnology is organizing a National Level Seminar on Sustainable Waste Management, Problems and Solutions. It is a three-day seminar (29 January to 31 January). The second day of the seminar began with the power point presentations by esteemed dignitaries.

Among the many dignitaries who presented problems and solutions on Sustainable waste management in various ways were Dr. S.P.Kale, Nuclear Agricultural and Biotechnology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Dr.Varanashi Krishnamoorthy of Varanashi Research Foundation, Adanthadka and Dr.Hareesh Joshy, Professor and the Head of the Department of Zoology, Vermitechnogical Unit, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. The progamme is sponsored by the BRNS Mumbai.The dignitaries spoke on the varied topics like Vermicomposting of Agriculture and Urban Solid Wastes, Bioenergy options, Traditional methods of sustainable waste management, etc.

SEMINAR OF BIOTECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The valedictory function of UGC sponsored Hands On Workshop On Principles And Techniques In Biological Sciences was held on 28 January, 2009 at the Xavier auditorium. The programme was presided over by the Chief Guest, Dr. Derek Lobo, advisor (retired) of World Health Organisation, the Guest of Honour, Dr. K. Rajendra, Principal of Expert PU College and Rev. Fr. Swebert D’Silva, Principal of St. Aloysius College (autonomous), Mangalore. The Chief guest Dr. Derek Lobo appreciated the students’ interest in the subject and asked them to appreciate the dignity of labour and stressed on the importance of employing proper teaching methods while teaching the basic sciences at the school level.

29 Jan. NATIONAL SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT INAUGURATED
A three-day national level seminar on Sustainable Waste Management, Problems and Solutions was inaugurated, here at St Aloysius College, today.The seminar is organized by the post graduate department of biotechnology. This seminar is sponsored by BRNS and BARC, Mumbai.
In his welcome address, Rev. Fr. Swebert D’Silva SJ, the principal of the College, stressed the importance of waste management.
The Chief Guest for the day was Prof. Dr. K.M. Abdul Rahiman, Vice President of National Environmental Science Academy. In his address the professor spoke about the importance of managing wastes in an eco friendly way.
Dr. Susan Eapen of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, made presidential remarks. She focused on creating awareness among the youth and children; she and also expressed her hopes on the younger generation.
The convener for the programme was Dr. Asha Abraham. The programme was inaugurated by planting a sapling.

The Evening We Belived in… came to an end.

The long awaited ‘Musical Evening’ did arrive with its magical effect which even Obama could not have created. It all began on a right note with Byron and Pavitra welcoming the gathering with exuberant words. Then it was the turn of the aloysiuans to show the world what they hold in them. The ‘Rock, Pop, and Classical’ songs found their way out to the audience. The Evening was added colour with lecturers coming out with their best songs to entertain the students. The dances sent stirring effect among the audience. ‘What begins well ends well.’ The evening came to a proper end with the students dancing out their happiness in the form of ‘Baila.’

The Sanskrit Sangha

 

20 Jan. The Sanskrit sangha of St.Aloysius College was organised a lecture on Astronomy, “The ancient wisdom and science” in the Xavior auditorium, today at 04:15 pm. The chief guest of the programme was Dr Kumara Subramanya and the president was Dr Shikaripura Krishnamurthy.
             Dr Shikaripura Krishnamiurthy,lectured in kannada, in his lecture, “jyothishyawemba pracheena-jnana-vijnana”, explained the meaning of ‘jyothishya’ that is ‘jyothi’ means ‘light’ and ’shasthra’ means ‘teachings’ and it is the ‘knowledge with light’. he also explained that we get our fruit of deeds of this life in our our next life. He also lectured that every planets provides us the fruite of our life.
   Vrinda Shenoy and Avinash, the secrataries were present for the programme. Devika welcomed the gathering. The prayer was conducted by Nirmala. Archana compered the ceremony.

Giving a Creative name to the Creative Picture

The Al-Madhyam association conducted a caption writing competition in the Audio-Visual room on 20 Jan. A Picture was displayed on the screen and the students were asked to give a creative and meaningful caption in 15 minutes. It was quite a fun to see the students staring at the picture to find a meaningful caption. Ms.Manorama the president of the association was present at the event. The competition was preceded by Bal Kiran the secretary of the association.

Rediscovering the Ancient Knowledge

The Sanskrit Sangha of St.Aloysius College organised a lecture on Astronomy, “The ancient wisdom and science” at Xavior auditorium. Dr.kumara Subramanya, the chief guest and Dr.Shikaripura, the president added beauty by their very presence and inspiring talk. Dr.Shikaripura Krishnamurthy explained the meaning of ‘Jyothishya’- jyothi meaning light and shasthra meaning teaching and when put together means ‘the Knowledge with Light.’ Students who were present at the event really encountered the knowledge beaming around them.

A Meaningful talk- CLC Assosiation

The CLC Association had a talk arranged for all the Christian students in the Xavier auditorium.  Prof. Lawrence Pinto, the resource person addressed the responsibility we have as the citizens of the world. He also urged the students to fight against all odds and build a better society. He spoke of six major enemies. They included population, scarcity of resources, nuclear abuse, food crisis, environment degradation and man himself. He told the students as young people that it was high time they took some urgent steps to make this world a better place. His address did stir the hearts of the audience and got the loudest applause ever.

A Worksohp on Vermitechnology

A Workshop on Vermitechnology was held at Xavier’s block on 17th of Jan. Mr.Premnath Alva inaugurated the chef guest of the event inaugurated it by lighting lamp. The seminar highlighted the importance of waste management and vermin technology. The one day seminar came to an end with signing of ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ between St.Aloysius College, Mangalore and Govinda Das College, Suratkal. Creative Presentations on waste management by resource persons enhanced the knowledge of the audience.

Parents and Teachers meet for better

 Parents- Teachers meet was held at Eric Mathias hall in IT block at 4.30 pm, organized by the staff members of the college. About five hundred parents actively participated in it.  It begun with a beautiful prayer song, led by the lecturers of English Department. Ms. Judith Pinto, department of Hindi, escorted and as well as welcomed the dignitaries with her short and sweet words. Mr. Alwyn D’sa was the MC, who did a wonderful job throughout the programme.
The Principal, Fr. Swebert D’silva SJ, in his Presidential address, rightly mentioned the purpose of this and any other such meetings. He said that the purpose of this meeting is that the Aloysius College needs parents support to give the better education to the students. He also rightly put it that the college prepares men and women for others, especially for the poor. It gives option to the poor. It gives scholarship, free mid-day meal, concession in the fees and lot more privileges to the poor students. It inculcates values in the students to make them differentiate between good and bad…At the end of his address there was a visual presentation by the electronic department. It explained the activities going on in the college campus, the courses it is offering to the students etc.
