The three day, TRI Continental Film Festival on Human Rights in addition to its customary “shooting stars” organized by the department of Mass Communication, St.Aloysius College began on 20 May, 2009. It was organized in collaboration with Human Rights in Frames and Bangalore Film Society
. Mr. Pattabhi Somiyaji, English professor in University College was the chief guest of the event. Mr. George Kutti, founder editor of “deep focus” was another eminent personality of the day. The festival started with an invocation. Rev.Richard Rego, HOD of Mass Communication introduced the guests to the audience.

The chief guest, Mr.Pattabhi Somiyaji, inaugurated the function by unveiling the curtain and fixing the globe on the creative collage, prepared by the students of Mass communication. In his inaugural address he stressed on the Right to live liberty and freedom. He said ‘we need to stand up to our fundamental rights’. He condemned the inhuman attitude of few fundamental groups that were causing the havoc in around Mangalore. He dedicated his talk to the girl who committed suicide and to the girl who bravely faced the inhuman treatments of fundamentalists. It was clear from the beginning of his speech that India was facing the tough challenge both from the terrorists outside and inside.

The film festival began on a right note with the screening of ‘
Leila Khalid’, a film that throws light on the different side of terrorism and how a lady fights for her rights to live in her country. The day ended with the screening of yet another breath-taking movie the ‘Sari Soldier’. It was all about how the women in Nepal fought for their rights. It really moved the audience to think differently and respond
