‘Praja prabuthvakke jayavagali’ meaning ‘Jai to Democracy’ . Don’t misunderstand this to be Rahmans latest hit song. These were the slogans which gave life to the protest rally organised by first year Mass Communication students. Post graduate students from the department of Social Work and English Literature also participated in the protest. The rally was held to protest against the recent isuues in Mangalore, the latest being denial of freedom of speech and expresssion in which B.A Samvartha, a correspondent of The Hindu was threatened by radical groups. The rally also addressed the issue in which Charlie Chaplin statue was not allowed to be constructed in Baindur, Udupi.

Rev Fr Richard Rego, the HOD,Department of Mass Communication addressed the gathering after which the rally from Nehru Maidan progressed to the DC office.

The post graduate students marching in a well organised line shouting slogans showed solidarity to the cause. Freedom of speech and expression and Human Rights is what the studenst are asking for through their action.

Ismat Fazir, writer and students expressed their opinion on the issue. A street play by the MSW students were also staged. The street play addressed issues of freedom of speech and expression.

THe Memorandum to be submitted to the DC was read out after which the HOD of the department along with others handed it over to the DC.
