SARANG 107.8 FM – Radio Workshop Concludes

27 June 2009.  It was a week worth spent – training our students in Community Radio program production and RJ-ing. All three resource persons did a good job. Krishna Pradeep, my former student did well to give a good account to his Alma Mater in content production – two days of sweat and labour for him for his Mass Communication Department & for his College! In the meantime, the College also succesfully launched Mangalore’s one and the only Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM. For the next few weeks the Radio SARANG will be on trial run.

The workshop ended up producing some good programmes for the Radio. Acquiring some wonderful skills, too.

One heart-warming aspect: two of our high school boys participated actively in this. Their enthusiasm was contagious! The boys -Vaibhav Fernandes and Suhas of VIII std. at St Aloysius College High School, did a wonderful job. Future is bright. Community Radio is here to stay!

The College Student Council Election took place on 27th June.  Darryl D’Souza (BBM), Jeeth Lobo (B.Com), and Daphney (B.Com) were elected Student Council President, Secretary, and Joint Secreatry respectivley. Good wishes to the winners, and good spirit, all participants! News with photographs will be posted tomorrow!

The soft launch involved a variety of programmes in single slot of four-hours duration  from 6pm to 10pm. which included music and jingles. SARANG 107.8FM will have daily broadcast of two hours each in the evenings from 6 to 8 O’Clock.

The great risk involved in a community radio - all types of risks!

The  current two hour broadcast will be increased with the formal launch, once the two month trial period is over.  Currently, SARANG 107.8 FM is testing signals in Mangalore and around.

The programme content will include health, hygiene, education, culture, entertainment, agriculture, and information on other essential commodities and aspects of life. The programmes will broadcast in five different languages Kannada, English, Konkani, Tulu and Beary, besides also catering to the outstation students’ needs.

Radio Sarang 107.8 FM is not a commercial radio. The main objective of the programmes is service to the society and to partner the Government in development. Since it is an extended programme by the government, the promoters of the community radio SARANG 107.8 are involving the neighbouring communities  like agricultural, education, cultural, and various service sectors, for the benefit of the local community. The College has already got some of the local institutions and NGOs interested in community development to partner them. SARANG requests all the public, including farmers and wage-earners to participate in the programmes production, thus making the community voices be heard.

After the initial tete-e-tete with the youngsters, election of class representatives, and formalities, the staff members met together to greet new rector Fr Joseph Rodrigues. Besides, it was also an occasion for the Principal to greet the staff on the successful completion of two years of autonomy, to congratulate them on the succesful completion of examinations, good results, and all the small little works done by the staff members during the holidays.

Fr Principal also outlined the road ahead for the College – most important being NAAC reacreditation.

And then the new rector addressed the staff.

College Reopens – MCMS Results First to be Declared

12 June. It was the first day, first show for the newcomers of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore. The first year (FY) students of various under graduate courses thronged St Aloysius College, to familiarise themselves and, of course, to spend at least three meaningful & fruitful years of learning.

And to make things still more interesting, Master of Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) became the first Post Graduate (PG) department of St Aloysius College Mangalore to declare the even semester (for 2008-09) results. And what a way – 100% results have been achieved in the even (II) semester too!
It’s a double whammy!

Change of Theme

12 June. The theme (design) of the blog has been changed once again. This was unavoidable. Since no other  design could contin the Post Graduate results table completly, the best suiting theme had to be pressed into service.

We will be back soon on the cool Ocean Mist theme.
