Swami Dheeranandji speaks…

“Success comes before work only in the dictionary.” This was the first message and highlight of the talk by Swami Dheeranandji of Ramakrishna Ashram. He had come from Chickmanglur to Mangalore to interact with students from various schools and colleges. He began the session by chanting a few bhajans and a song on our nation. Swamiji appealed to all of us to follow the example of Vivekananda and lead more meaningful lives, focus on our goal and avoid the distractions that come on our way of achieving success. With a lot of examples from the lives of various great people, he convinced us that hardwork is the only way to success and there is no shortcut. He gave us an insight into the situation that an Indian child at the age of five is considered to be the most brilliant however as the individual approaches 16 years he is ranked 28th in the world. This is because of a lot of unwanted activities that hamper our mental growth. He thus explained to us the importance of having good thoughts and keeping our minds free from evil and mental jargon. He asked us to be like the Japanese who in the midst of misery due to the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not give up but toiled hard to convert Japan into the superpower that it is today. He said that the difference was because Japan had ‘Citizens’ whereas India has mere ‘population’. For those of us aspiring to become teachers in the future, Swamiji gave 3 golden rules for an ideal teacher: 1) Love the subject. 2) Love the profession 3) Love the students as your own children. He concluded by saying that if we can control our own mind, then we can control the world.
