8 Dec. Art Beat 2006 was off with a big bang on Friday, December 8 here at the auditorium, St Aloysius College.
The welcoming of the guests was carried out in a traditional manner, with two mundu-clad students leading the procession.
Rev Fr Francis Serrao, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions presided over the function while Dr Sanjeev Rai, Dean of Fr Muller Medical College, the Chief Guest, inaugurated the formal Art Beat.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sanjeeva Rai expressed his wonder on the trend of each department conducting a fest, thereby providing ample opportunities to the students to showcase their talents. He added that such events are instrumental in bringing different minds together.
Addressing the gathering, Fr Francis Serrao unfolded his feelings by saying that a fest like this made him nostalgic of his good old days as an Arts student himself.
Competitions and events followed the formal function.
Art Brain, the quiz competition was conducted early in the day. St Agnes College reigned supreme at the end of the preliminary rounds. The final round will be held on Saturday. Seven Colleges participated. Dr Norbert Lobo (Dept of Economics) conducted the quiz.
An interesting event ‘Art 2 Word’ tested the mettle of the participants as they were given a picture and were expected to interpret it. Seven colleges participated. Mr Alwyn D’Sa (Dept of English) was the judge.
‘Brief Case’ was yet another event that took place during the day. The movie ‘Terrorist’ was screened and the participants were asked to write a review of the film. ‘TurnCoat’ another gripping event was one of the highlights of the day. The participants were given topics on which they had to speak both for and against. It also tested their fluency in Hindi. Prof Gopal Rao, former Hindi lecturer, St Aloysius College, and Ms Shailaja, Hindi Lecturer, St Agnes College, were the judges.
‘Quest Parle’ a la Parliament proceedings was another event of the day. Five Colleges participated in the event.
Yaksha Mime Ad, an ad presentation via traditional yakshagana was a novel idea to mime. Vivekananda College, Puttur, bagged the the first place.
In ‘Misinterpretation’ the teams were given a picture each and were asked to give weird interpretations.
In the entire event that brought students to lime light, one aspect remained out of focus: even as most students were assigned the role of ‘news-makers’, all the first year Journalism students were the ‘news-takers’. They, along with a few second and final year journalism student-coordinators kept providing the latest updates through reporting, photography and videography, amidst the noise and din of the fest.
